Fellow Living with Balls writer, Don Valdez, introduced me to the game of craps during this time and I’ve been hooked since.
There are plenty of gambling options to choose from when you’re at a casino but I’m here to give you five reasons why you should make craps your first choice.
1. The Odds are as Good as it Gets
Among all the table games, craps gives you the best casino odds. According to fastodds.com, the house advantage in craps, which can be defined simply as the ratio of the average loss to the initial bet is just 0.6 percent (assuming you bet the pass and take the odds). Those odds are pretty much the most favorable in the entire casino. That is a big difference compared to some other chance games, such as roulette, where the house odds are 5.26 percent or keno where the house advantage is a whopping 25 percent! By playing craps you are reducing your chances of losing money.
2. Everyone Wins Together
The best thing about craps is that just about everyone at the table is rooting for the same thing. If the roller makes a point, everyone at the table gets excited (unless you are one of those assholes who bets the no pass line). If the shooter gets on a great roll and is making everyone lots of money, things get really exciting. At some point, you will likely have the desire to give a complete stranger a giant hug if he/ she keeps making his or her points. The longer the streak goes, the greater the buzz will be surrounding the table. That can’t be matched in any other table game.
Meanwhile, in other table games it’s easy to make enemies, especially when you consider the shady clientele that often find their way into casinos. There are plenty of times in black jack when someone hits when they should have stayed, subsequently busts and then screws the next person over because the face card the other person needed had just been dealt.
In poker, one person wins the pot, while another person watches some asshole take all his hard earned money away because the winner got lucky by making a bullshit inside straight.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy poker and black jack as well but these conflicts can be avoided if you play online. You can do so now if you click here.
Craps makes for a much more friendly and safe atmosphere when you’re at a physical casino.
3. The Lingo is Awesome
One of the fun things about craps is the great lingo associated with the game. Most table games involve saying the words “hit” and “stay” or “fold,” call” or “raise”. Those words are not fun to say. If you stand at a craps table long enough you will feel like the players are speaking a different language. At first, it can be intimidating but once you learn the lingo, it becomes lots of fun.
In craps, you may find yourself in this scenario: You bet the “pass,” then watch the shooter “throws the bones,” then you “lay odds,” and get excited when the shooter makes the “point.” You decide to up the ante, so you bet the “hi-lo” and hit on “midnight. Then you bet on “aces,” and roar in excitement when the shooter hits “snake eyes” for you. After that you decide to get really bold by “coloring up” and putting all your winnings on the “yo.”
If you’ve never played before, you have no clue what I just said. By the way, I don’t recommend this strategy. You’ll likely lose it all betting on the yo.
4. You Don’t Need Any Skill to Play
Many casino games require a level of skill to be successful. Poker takes strong knowledge of basic strategy, a good poker face, and an innate ability to read other people to be successful, while black jack requires a person to take a math course to win big. In craps, a person really only needs to know a few basic rules and can potentially win a ton of money.
Really the only craps rule a newbie needs to know is: don’t roll a seven once the point is established. Granted, there are a ton of betting scenarios in craps and it can get kind of confusing. There are still of plenty of bets in craps I don’t completely understand and there have been a number of times I had to be corrected by a dealer. If your new to the game, it will happen to you as well but fortunately that will have no negative effect on your ability to win money.
5. The Possibilities are Limitless
In craps, there is truly no limit to the amount of money you can win. As long as you don’t crap out, you can keep winning money. You can conceivably roll forever and never hit that dreaded number.
On May 29, 2009, Patricia Demauro, a grandmother from New Jersey, who had played craps just once before, set the craps world record at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City by rolling for 4 hours and 18 minutes straight without crapping out. She went 154 rolls before finally rolling a seven. A Stanford professor put the odds of achieving this at 1 in 1.56 trillion! I can’t imagine what the scene at that table must have been like and how much money the table collectively won that night. I just wish I could have been there.
So next time you’re at a casino, give yourself the best opportunity to have fun and make money, and go straight to the craps table.
